That’s deep…

Dear Logan,

Mom: “Logan, put on your pants.”

Logan: “No Mom, look at my story.  My story says I don’t wear pants.”

That was awesome. 🙂

Be brave, like I know you are

March 24th, 2011

Dear Logan,

Maybe some day these eloquent words will provide comfort to you or someone you love.

I hope this isn’t too late. I was busy sharpening your axe, and polishing your armour. I have no fear of what may happen to you, but I worry for the demons who might foolishly crowd your way, nag at the back of your mind, tell you to give in to the dark swirling shadow that is the unpredictable and dangerous future. I worry only that you may become distracted with doubt or some unimportant detail and lose sight of your duty as lightbearer for the rest of us who follow you.

Know this: the rest of us have seen the future, and what happens in the next shadowed hours mean nothing. No man with honour can ever die. If you wake in Valhalla tomorrow, then keep the chair next to you empty for when I arrive.

Be brave, brother, like I know you are. When death comes, laugh and I will laugh with you. If it is your time, wait for the rest of us in Valhalla. No man lives forever, but the brave are eternal. Be the fire that lights the way, and hold your chin high so the rest of us can follow your fearless lead. Your courage is the raging tempest that give those weaker than you the momentary fire to stand tall in the hopes they can meet your shadow. Some time, some where, some one will will think of you when they are lost and alone and wish to give up. They will think of you and push on, and succeed and conquer their fears.

When sleep comes, know that you never end, but a new plane becomes. Worry not about the tendrils of slumbers haunt, but feel your grip on the handle of your weapon. Be brave like I know you are; be the man others look to as a symbol of courage.

In the hours that come you may wake from your battle here, or you may wake in Valhalla, with your brothers and mine. If you do, raise a glass and sing for your heroes. Know that you are immortal, because nothing can destroy courage. There is no force that can mute the flame that fearless men inspire in the rest of us.

I want to believe that although I know fear and doubt may rally against you, you will raise your chin, and stand beside me. You will be the one I look to when I need courage in the silent, lonely moments of my life. Going forward into the dark, know that you are never alone, and as my brother, you will always be immortal.

I do not know you, but I love you; brother. Be brave, like I know you are.

A good reader

November 14th, 2010

Dear Logan,

Yesterday, from the back seat, I heard “S-T-O-P spells stop!” as we pulled up to a stop sign.  Tonight we were reading your Cars book, and you recognized “Dad” and “Mom” from practising spelling them with your Mom.   And you sounded out “Buzz” while reading it on your boots, all by yourself.  While I was rocking you before bed, I told you you were a good reader, and you said “Thanks!”

We’re pretty lazy parents when it comes to “school” stuff.  We don’t go nuts with trying to teach you stuff like letters, numbers, and reading, the way some parents do.  You seem to do just fine picking most of it up all by yourself.  I think you’re gonna go far, kid.

Love,

Dad

Nothing to smell here; move along…

July 30th, 2010

Dear Logan,

I don’t think I can add anything to your mom’s story, so here you go. 🙂

(09:06:25 AM) f98loki: so he is walking sideways
(09:06:34 AM) f98loki: with his butt towards the wall
(09:06:38 AM) f98loki: as fast as he can
(09:06:44 AM) f98loki: so i ask, logan do you need a new butt
(09:06:46 AM) f98loki: he sprints
(09:06:48 AM) f98loki: NOOOOOOOOO
(09:07:04 AM) f98loki: he was trying to make to his toys without me smelling him

Bittersweet

June 21st, 2010

Dear Logan,

Today, Clint put you to bed for your nap.  About 10 minutes later, you came walking out of your room, and said you had to poop.  So he took you to your potty chair, and that’s exactly what you did.  Then you wanted to make sure I knew about your accomplishment. 🙂  We clapped and cheered for you.  Clint took a picture of it.  I won’t post it. 😉

I wasn’t quite sure how we were going to approach potty training.  We just kind of ask you if you want to use your potty chair whenever it seems like you have to go, and today you took us up on it.  I can’t say I’m going to miss all of the diaper changes (well, maybe the blue ones) once you get this perfected, but this milestone really makes you seem so much more like a little boy and so much less like our little baby.  It’s tough to watch you grow up, kid, but I’m trying to soak up every second of it that I can, and it’s everything I ever thought it would be and more.

 Love,

Dad

Readin

May 8th, 2010

Dear Logan,

When the title sequence of Toy Story 2 starts, there’s a big “O” that zooms away to become “TOY” and you always yell out “O! Y! T!” when it comes on.   Yesterday, you said “O! Y! T!…TOY!”  Congrats on reading your first word. 🙂

P.S.

You really really love Buzz Lightyear.

Cry cry cry

April 13th, 2010

Dear Logan,

Twice now (once for your Mom and a couple days later for me), you got upset when you didn’t get something you wanted (I think both times it was food), and instead of crying you just whined “Cry cry cry!”  You are hilarious. 🙂

Freedom!

Freedom!

Dear Logan,
Today we took down the rail, and turned your crib into a bed, because you decided yesterday that you’re no longer afraid to just jump out whenever you want. Last night and tonight, putting you to bed was a bit of a challenge, since you could just get right back out as soon as I put you in there. I would just stand outside your door, wait for you to open it, tell you “no”, and put you back to bed. Last night we did that about 20 times. Tonight it only took about 7 times before you gave up. At one point tonight, you thought you could outsmart me, and hid behind your door when you opened it. 🙂

You are turning into a little boy so fast. I miss my baby, but I love the person that you’re growing into. Dream sweet dreams of freedom. 🙂

Sneaky

March 6th, 2010

Dear Logan,

Yesterday, Clint put you to bed for a nap.  A few minutes later, we started hearing your bedroom door lightly hitting against the frame, like it does when it’s windy.  But after a few more minutes, we realized the windows weren’t even open, and Clint went to investigate.  When he went to open the door to your bedroom, he found that you had jumped out of bed, gone to open the door to escape, and had locked yourself into your room.  All this time trying to get out, and you didn’t say a single word.  I’m not sure where you thought you were going to sneak out to, but we got in with a screwdriver and you looked very proud of yourself. 🙂

P.S.

Last night, your Mom and I found out that you really like Abby Cadabby.  I’m not going to put any more details here, but I think that we are both scarred from the experience.

That’s Good Enough For Me

January 22nd, 2010

Dear Logan,

Tonight while I was giving you a bath, I stuck a letter C on the tub wall and you said “C… cookie!”  Pretty good job kid.  The first letter you learned was O about a month ago, and you suddenly just started pointing out all of the Os you saw everywhere.  Since then you’ve learned M, A, E, and 8.  Tonight we were looking at a fish tank and I asked you how many fish were in it and you said “A… E… Fish!  Ahahaha!” (that’s how you count 2 fish like the Count.) 🙂
